Wire Gauge Explained
We recommend using 18 Gauge wire in the installation of these dog fence systems.

Use 20 Gauge if:

  • For loose, sandy soil
  • The yard has little vegetation
  • The wire will be buried in low traffic areas

Use 18 Gauge if:

  • For rocky soil
  • The yard has a lot of vegetation in it
  • The wire will be buried in high traffic areas
  • Owners will be installing the wire above ground
Remember, even a small break in the wire will cause the system to fail. Owners cannot purchase systems with 18 gauge wire at the local pet store, or through pet supply catalogs. Owners can only get 18 gauge wire through a select few internet retailers.
