Car Battery Safety Tips

Battery is one of the most essential components of a car but it also can be the most hazardous if you don’t properly maintain it. Whether you are performing routine check-up or jumpstarting a battery, always take the necessary precautions to avoid getting hurt.

Below are some car battery safety tips that you can follow:

  • If you’re working with car batteries, remove all your metallic jewelry. Electrical charge can go through it.
  • Wear the proper clothes when fixing a battery. Gloves, goggles, long sleeve clothing and pants are the best attire while working with car battery to prevent your skin and eyes from acid burn.
  • In case the battery acid goes to your clothes or skin, treat it with a mixture of baking soda and water. If it causes burn, seek medical treatment immediately.
  • Disconnect the negative cable first and reconnect it last to avoid getting electrocuted from current overflow. Never lean over the car battery when connecting or disconnecting it.
  • Ventilated area is the ideal working location when cleaning or filling a battery.
  • Inspect the condition of your battery at least once a year to see if there is a crack or corrosion. If there is, replace the battery as soon as possible to avoid further damage.
  • If the battery needs to be replenished, pour water into it slowly. Always keep your face far from the opening.
